Xanga is LJ's original Myspace-of-blogging doppelganger. Wikipedia has a pretty extensive article on Xanga, highlighting their history and features. Xanga provides ad supported free blogs and two levels of paid service; here is the comparison chart.

If someone is having problems with LiveJournal, chances are Xanga is ten times worse. It is probably not a good replacement.
