The default effect describes the phenomena where people will often stick to default options as long as they are "good enough", as opposed to seeking out the best possible option. LiveJournal takes advantage of this by making the Plus account level selected by default during the creation of journals and communities; many new users don't even realize there is an option to have no ads on their journals for free.
