LJ Talk is LiveJournal's new instant messaging system based on Jabber. Users can log in with any IM client that supports Jabber with an id of

exampleusername@livejournal.com

And their LiveJournal password. SSL is currently off and the port is 5222. LJ Talk will eventually be hooked into ESN, enabling users to receive notifications over IM.

Clients that support LJ Talk include:

But perhaps the easiest way for the curious to test out LJ Talk is to log in using Meebo (a web-based IM client).

The server being developed by LiveJournal for all of this is DJabberd.

[edit] Timeline

On July 7, 2006, the service was released ([info]lj_dev) in an alpha/beta state. The original page about it is here.

On October 12, 2006, the service was officially released ([info]news) to all users. The recommended client for use with this service is a special LiveJournal-branded version of the Gizmo Project, currently available on Mac OS X and Windows; a Linux client is reportedly in the works. The release added a Jabber ID field to the Contact Info area of the Profile page that in the form of exampleusername@livejournal.com. This looks a lot like an email address, and for paid users who set up their livejournal.com email forwarding, it is a valid email. This field defaulted to public unless the contact info section of the user's Profile was set to friends-only. It was also shown with no manipulation to defend against spambots from harvesting addresses. An option to remove this Jabber ID line without making all contact information friends only was not live at the time of release, but is planned.

In the future, LJ Talk will be integrated with ESN, allowing users to receive notifications over IM.
