Here are the communities to watch if you want to keep up to date with what LiveJournal's doing or planning:

[edit] Basic Official Communities

news	The main news letter of LJ, generally once a month.
lj_releases	Necessary to keep up on feature changes as they happen. Replaced featureannounce.
feedback	Hardly ever used, but watch it just in case we ever do get asked for feedback.
howto	Tutorials for various LJ related topics.
knownissues	Just automatically posts what's in the Known Issues box on the Support page. Since it hasn't been updated since October 3rd, 2006, go to the Support page instead.
lj_2008	For community dialog after the SUP purchase.
lj_ads	For announcing things about advertising on LJ.
lj_biz	Low volume with strange and necessary tidbits. Watch it. This is where ads first were announced.
lj_design	About design decisions on LJ; recommended watching.
lj_maintenance	Used to report about any planned maintenance or downtime.
lj_policy	For discussion about policy, after the SUP purchase.
lj_spotlight	A just-for-fun kind of community spotlighting different communities and journals on LJ.
s2howto	Tutorials for customization via S2.
suggestions	For people to post about and discussion suggestions to LJ.

bugs	bugs isn't really open anymore, so chances are you shouldn't bother.
changelog	High volume and not very useful unless you're a geek. kunzite1 made a very nice viewer for it here.
community_promo	For promoting communities.
community_quest	For seeking out existing communities.
helpscreening	For asking questions about participating in support.
howto_userdoc	For discussing additions and corrections to howto and s2howto.
lj_clients	For discussiong the use and development of LJ Clients.
lj_dev	Discussing LJ development; not horribly important unless you're a geek sort.
lj_nifty	Third party LJ tools and tips posted here.
lj_support	For making announcements to the Support peeps. Probably not necessary to watch; contains friended entries for Support members.
lj_syndication	Talks about the syndication features of LJ.
lj_textmessaging	Talks about the text messaging features of LJ.
lj_userdoc	Keep up on changes and suggestions to the user documentation.

no_lj_ads	We can be useful on occasion when we're not busy bitching.
syn_promo	For promoting new syndication feeds on LJ.
syn_quest	For requesting new syndication feeds on LJ for people who can't do it for themselves.
the_lj_herald	UNOFFICIAL, but probably as effective as friending all of the other communities
