ESN (lj_dev) stands for "Event/Subscription/Notification" and will be the new notification system.

Permanent accounts gained access (permmembers) on August 10, 2006.

Paid accounts gained access (paidmembers) on September 5, 2006.

Plus accounts gained access (news) on September 7, 2006.

Basic accounts gained access (lj_releases) on September 21, 2006.

As of this edit (2006/11/27), there is still a bug where notification emails will be sent without comment text.

An email is sent to the email address associated with your LiveJournal account.

An instant message is sent to an IM handle. The first network to be implemented will be LJ Talk.

A notification is sent to the Message Center.

An SMS is sent to the phone number associated with your LiveJournal account.
