Basic Accounts are the lowest tier of Account Levels on LiveJournal.

This, however, does not necessarily make them less desirable--they cost nothing and have no ads displayed on most application pages. Basic users will see ads on the pages of Plus users. They will also see the promotion of Sponsored Communities on the front page and promotions from companies like HP.

Before the Plus account level was added, these accounts were called Free Accounts.

Basic accounts became unavailable to newly registering users on March 12th, 2008. Back then, Basic accounts did not display ads to logged out users.

This changed on August 28th, 2008. The ability to downgrade to Basic was added, but ads were displayed on Basic journals and communities to logged out users.
